The New York Times article on debt collectors who shake down the living for the debts of the dead made a big splash nationwide. It was an especially big deal in Minnesota, since DCM Services, featured prominently in the article, is a Minnesota company. The legal obligation is implied the second the company asks for payment. Most people assume that if a company is asking you to pay for something it’s because they think you have some obligation to pay it.
How is this different from calling someone up and asking for $500 just because you want their money?
