Tax refund is (usually) happy season for debt collectors
You know who I’ll bet is really happy about the stimulus checks coming next month? Debt collectors. Tax refund is (usually) happy season for debt collectors, and this year they get two bites at the apple.

Those stimulus checks can help you negotiate lower payoffs on outstanding debts. A collector would rather take a lump sum than set you up on payments. And why pay $50 a month for ten months instead of paying $250 right now if you’ve got it? The best time to negotiate a settlement is the last few days of the month - just like buying a used car. And whatever you agree to with the collector…. GET IT IN WRITING. And yes, collections is a comission-based job - not much different than selling cars or mortgages or houses.
