Poverty in the suburbs
The StarTribune has a nice article about the difficulties of being poor in the suburbs. A number of Minnesota legislators took a tour of some of the support services facilities in the suburbs and met with some of the people in poverty. While the article is a little light (see Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America by Barbara Ehrenreich) it does bring attention to the problem and highlights some of the added difficulties, such as greater transportation problems and fewer support services.
One of the agencies the legislators met with, Bridging Inc. said that three-quarters of its clients are single women, 85% make less than $15,000 a year, and many are escaping abusive relationships.
