Credit card cos. encouraging bankrupts to be ashamed of themselves?
I posted about the (possible) decline of stigma associated with bankruptcy early last month. Last week, Katie Porter dug up Capital One’s “10-k Annual Report,” in which Capital One expressed concern that “changing attitudes about incurring debt and the stigma of personal bankruptcy” could change credit card use to Capital One’s detriment.
Last Friday, Elizabeth Warren talked about background checker Intelius, who delivers domestic violence conviction and bankruptcy filing information to concerned daters. The ad in the New York Times says “GET THE WHOLE STORY ON HIM, BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE.” Apparently selling the moral depravity of bankruptcy is good business for Intelius, too.
Whether or not the stigma associated with filing bankruptcy actually is declining, it looks like a lot of people want to make sure it stays where it is.
