BoingBoing: “Law student files rootkit small-claim against Sony”
If you haven’t been following Sony BMG’s DRM (digital rights management) woes, the BoingBoing post contains a roundup of posts on the subject. In brief, many Sony CDs contain a “rootkit” that installs itself without permission and sends information about you and your computer to Sony. It can also damage your computer. The uninstaller Sony offered causes even more problems. See if I buy another Sony CD until they stop this ridiculous DRM business. My radio works just fine, and doesn’t attempt to spy on me, destroy my computer, or limit who else can listen to it.
SonySuit.com blogger Mark Lyon decided to opt out, saying:
I’ve looked at the Class Action settlement very closely. It does nothing to help resolve the problems I’ve had with my computer, since Sony BMG wasn’t required to provide a method of removing XCP without downloading more of their software. I already know what happens when one trusts Sony BMG.
If you are interested in such things, Mark even provided a copy of his complaint.
